Five Strategies for Successfully Treating Flea and Tick Infestations

Fleas and ticks are a nuisance to pets and people and pose health risks by causing skin irritation and transferring diseases.

To ensure flea and tick-free spaces inside and outside, it is important for PMPs to have the right treatment protocols to prevent and eliminate infestations.

Consider the following strategies when working with a customer:

  1. Pest Identification - Know which tick or flea species you are encountering on the customer’s property. This will help you select the most effective control strategy.
  2. Find the source - It is common for sources to be areas where pets/animals rest. Finding these locations will help in decisions for proper cleaning and treatments.
  3. Sanitation – Vacuuming indoor areas is critical. Not only does vacuuming help remove fleas, more importantly, the activity can cause pupal stage fleas to molt to adults, allowing newly emerged adults to be exposed to the treatment. Ensure the vacuum bag is disposed of and not left in the customer’s home or business!
  4. On-Animal Treatments - Ask your customers to consider on-animal treatments of pets. Their veterinarian is a good resource for treatment options.
  5. Pest Control - Suggest using products that are labeled with active ingredients for quick knockdown, good residual control, and insect growth regulation. These can provide fast control with long-term protection for the customer.
